Overview

Per the USMS Financial Policies and Operating Guidelines, LMSCs must file an annual tax return, per IRS guidelines.

  • Depending upon the annual receipts and expenses, the LMSCs shall file Form 990, 990-EZ or 990-N (e-postcard). LMSCs may consult with a tax advisor regarding filing requirements;

  • For LMSCs filing Form 990 or Form 990-EZ, a copy of the return shall be sent to the USMS National Office within 10 days after filing the return with the IRS;

  • LMSCs filing Form 990-N shall forward the emailed receipt from the IRS to the National Office who shall verify that the IRS has recorded the returns; and

  • Any income unrelated to exempt activities may be taxable. Consult with a tax advisor.

Instructions

The 990N consists of eight questions and is very easy to file. It requires no financial data, so you can file it any time. Review the IRS Tax Filing Requirements page for more details. It’s important that all LMSCs file a 990N each year. A nonprofit organization that does not file a 990N for three consecutive years automatically loses its 501(c)3 tax exempt status with the IRS.

This tutorial will walk you through screen shots of the current online process for the 990-N filing process.
