Maximizing health, recovery, and strength gains through sleep and nutrition

Special Advertorial

If you aren’t consuming a nutritionally dense, low-calorie meal near bedtime, your body can go into a catabolic state, “cannibalizing” itself while you sleep.

Sleep is the most critical time of every 24-hour day. While the body is at rest, it’s best prepared to focus solely on growth, recovery, repair, and rejuvenation. Depending on when you eat, when you work out, and when you go to bed, even a nutritious dinner may not meet the demand to replenish nutrients depleted during the day’s work and sport—nutrients needed for the body to recover and repair effectively for the entire 10 to 12 hour period between dinner and the following morning’s breakfast.

When the body doesn’t have the protein and other important nutrients it needs to fuel this repair and recovery, it goes into a catabolic state, in which it breaks down lean muscle and other tissue to fuel the required functions. For Masters swimmers this process has added consequences because as we age, it’s already hard enough to maintain lean muscle and strength due to the accelerated degeneration naturally associated with aging.

But there are ways to avoid falling into a catabolic state, and three forms of protein can be especially helpful in fueling the time between dinner and breakfast.

Whey: Whey is a quickly absorbed protein used for immediate muscle repair and growth.

Caseinate: Caseinate is considered the time-release protein (and the anti-catabolic protein) because it acts as a long-term steady supply of protein for both growth and elimination of potential muscle loss.

Soy protein: Soy protein offers a high essential amino acid content and also has a multitude of benefits including stimulating the body’s ability to generate growth hormone.

To ensure a good night’s sleep and to wake up feeling stronger, more refreshed, and with the energy to take on the demands of the day, many athletes supplement with a nutritionally dense, low-calorie milkshake right before bed.

P2Life’s Nutriboost is an ideal nutritional supplement for Masters swimmers that has helped at least four USMS swimmers and world record holders—Laura Val, Rich Burns, Tim Shead, and David Guthrie—achieve great things. All four of these swimmers are longtime users of Nutriboost

Nutriboost contains all three of the superior proteins mentioned above in addition to more than 30 high quality vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, trace elements, and other nutrients. Nutriboost offers you what you need during the sleep process to maximize strength gains and help your body rebuild and rejuvenate as you sleep.
