Breaststroke and Butterfly Tips to Help You Swim Better
The butterfly–breaststroke combo drill will help you with both strokes
The butterfly–breaststroke combo drill might seem odd, but these two short-axis strokes have a history together; butterfly began evolving from breaststroke in the 1930s. Combining them in drill form leverages that shared origin story and can help you correct timing problems.
- Start by taking three strokes of butterfly, followed by three strokes of breaststroke, using the proper kick for each.
- Once you've perfected the three and three, switch to two and two.
- And once you have perfected the two and two, move to one and one, which is the best way to swim this drill.
Once you have the proper feel and timing, the butterfly–breaststroke combo is a fun drill for developing the timing of both strokes.
This video from Swimming World shows the evolution of butterfly and provides insight into why this drill is so useful.
