2023 Summer Nationals Update

USMS Statement on Nationals in Florida

We greatly value our members’ feedback and concerns. USMS is aware of recent legislation in Florida and travel advisories issued by minority and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups. We acknowledge that swimmers, coaches, event staff, and volunteers interested in being a part of the 2023 USMS Summer National Championship in Sarasota may face a challenging decision of whether to attend, especially those from diverse ethnicities and the LGBTQ+ community. USMS values inclusion in our efforts to foster a nationwide adult swimming community and we’re committed to ensuring Summer Nationals is a safe, enjoyable, and supportive experience for everyone. Therefore, if you have already registered for Summer Nationals and have decided not to attend due to recent legislation in Florida or advisories, we are happy to refund your registration fees by contacting Event Services.

Florida is home to over 3,500 USMS members and has high-caliber aquatics facilities, including several capable of hosting USMS national events such as the Selby Aquatic Center in Sarasota. There are also over 60 USMS clubs located in Florida that welcome adult swimmers from a multitude of backgrounds and communities to their workouts regularly. Sarasota was chosen over a year ago as a host in part to ensure our geographically dispersed membership has access to a USMS pool national championship every few years (this is the first time a pool nationals will be in the state since 2006) and to provide the host club the time necessary to prepare.

USMS will continue to focus on our members’ common passion for swimming and champion an inclusive and welcoming environment as we bring together adults of diverse backgrounds to enjoy the sport we love.
