California swimming

Greg Schaffer was born in Santa Clara, Calif. Greg started swimming at the age of five with Kona Kai country club in Santa Clara. At the age of nine he started USS swimming with Santa Clara Swim Club. Greg swam at Junior National's when he was 13 and at Senior National's when he was 16. He attended Bellarmine High School where he swam and played water polo.

After graduating he attended UCLA on a swimming scholarship. He was an eight time All-American at UCLA in 100 and 200 breast and 200 IM his junior and senior years and the 200 and 400 medley relays his senior year. Greg was voted most improved swimmer his junior year. His senior year he was voted most inspirational and was the team captain. Greg has completed his swimming eligibility and will be graduating from UCLA in June, 1994 with a degree in economics.

Greg swam in the Olympic Trials in 1988 and 1992. This year he attended the World University Games and was honored as being the US National Team Captain. Recently Greg was invited to compete in the Trofeo Del Chianti swim competition, in Poggi Bonsi, Italy. The meet will take place on November 5, 6, and 7, 1993. It is a professional meet and the top three competitors and the high point winner will win prize money. Greg will be swimming the 50 and 100 breast and the 100 and 200 IM. Greg will be going with Brian Kurza who swam for SCAQ in the May, 1993 Masters Nationals. Good luck to Greg and Brian as they go for the gold ($!!). Gregory M.
