Ronald 'Sickie' Marcikic

Ronald “Sickie” Marcikic

Founder/Director/Head Coach U C San Diego Masters Sports Program

Coach Marcikic is the Director of the Masters Sports Program and Head Masters Swimming Coach at the University of California, San Diego since 1982. He holds the highest rank, Level 5 Masters Coach, with the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA). He has been coaching all levels and ages of swimmers for over 44 years

Laureen Welting

Laureen Welting

Masters swim coach at The Olympic Club in San Francisco since 2001, coaching both open water and pool swimmers.

Laureen was the U.S. Masters Swimming Coach for World Championships in 2002, New Zealand, and 2004 in Italy. Many of Coach Welting’s swimmers rank in U.S. Masters Swimming Top 10. She has a degree in exercise and sports science. She received the “2008 Pacific Masters Coach of the Year” and “2008 Swimmer of the Year” awards for her work with the TOC’s swimmers.

Tom Boak

Tom Boak

Coach and President of Woodlands Masters Swim Team, the 2008 USMS Club of the Year.

Tom is a four-time meet director of USMS National Championships and USMS past president. Many of the Woodland Masters swimmers rank in USMS Top 10 and hold world and national records.

Gary Hall, Sr.

Gary Hall, Sr.

Director and coach of The Race Club.

Gary participated in three Olympics 1968, 1972, 1976; earning two silver medals and a bronze. He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as an Honor Swimmer in 1981. Coach Hall held 10 world records, 23 national titles, and 23 American records.

Kerry O'Brien

Kerry O’Brien

Head coach, Walnut Creek Masters from 1980 to the present.

Kerry is a level 5 ASCA Masters Coach. He was named U.S. Masters Swimming Coach of the Year in 1987, and Pacific Masters Coach of the Year in 1992. He is also a seven-time U.S. Masters Swimming National Champion in 100/200 Butterfly.

Dr. Genadijus Sokolovas

Genadijus Sokolovas, PH.D.

Director of physiology and sport science for USA Swimming from 2000 to 2008.

"Dr. G" has worked with USA Swimming Olympic team in 2000, 2004, and 2008. He has tested and consulted Olympic champions and medalists Michael Phelps, Dara Torres, Natalie Coughlin, Aaron Peirsol, Ryan Lochte, Jason Lezak, Ian Crocker, Rebecca Soni, and many others. He has developed physiological and biomechanical testing methods and databases for swimmers, pentathletes, and other endurance athletes. Testing methods include Lactate Clearance, Swim Power, Land/Water Strength, and Lactate Step Test.

Mickey Murad

Mickey Murad

Co-Founder of First Wave Swim Academy, Swim Coach for San Diego Tri Club and Assistant Coach with North Coast Aquatics, one of the premier club swim teams in the U.S.

Mickey won three Jr. National titles in distance freestyle events. Mickey attended the University of California, Berkeley and was a world ranked distance swimmer and achieved All-American status.

Matt Macedo

Matt Macedo

Co-Founder of First Wave Swim Academy and Assistant Coach at UC San Diego

Matt was named Pacific Swimming’s Swimmer of the Year in 1999. He swam for the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a two-time Division I NCAA champion. Matt was also a member of the 2001 World University Games team and a twenty-time All-American.

Frank Marcinkowski

Frank Marcinkowski

Head coach of Curl Burke Masters

Frank is the architect behind the rapid growth of Curl Burke Masters(CUBU). In 2004, the club had 23 swimmers. Four years later, the club had 400 swimmers. Now, CUBU is the largest team outside of California. In addition to swimmers who excel in the pool, Frank has created an environment where open water swimming and triathlons are emphasized. His team routinely run open water workouts during the warmer months. Frank also lends his expertise to USMS as a member of the Open Water Swimming Committee.
