Recipient: Ross Wales
Year: 1987
LMSC: Ohio

Ross Wales won a bronze medal in the 100 butterfly in the 1968 Olympic Games. In the early 1970’s, he served as an athletes’ representative to the National AAU Swimming Committee and a member of the Swimming Rules Committee. Ross served United States Swimming (USS) as its President from 1979 to 1984, at which time he became President of United States Aquatic Sports, Inc. (USAS) and remained so until 1988. During this time, Ross was also a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee Executive Board (1985-1989) and the President of the National Swimming Foundation (1984-1987).

Ross was awarded the Capt. Ransom J. Arthur M.D. Award in recognition of his service while President of USS, where he assisted U.S. Masters Swimming to become an independent not-for-profit corporate body. At the same time, Ross was leading USS out of the AAU. Ross is not a USMS member, nor has he ever been one, but his contributions to USMS are significant!
