USMS Award Recipient

Capt. Ransom J. Arthur M.D. Award

Recipient: Reg Richardson
Year: 1984
LMSC: Southern Pacific

Reg Richardson grew up in San Diego, CA. Not a serious swimmer in his youth, he instead belonged to a rowing club. In 1971, when he was 60 and living in Santa Barbara, he read about Masters swimming. Reg arranged for pool time for Masters swimmers  at the Los Banos pool and got  some informational articles into the local newspaper, all of which resulted in a growing Masters team. In spite of Reg’s lack of a swimming background, he became a very successful Masters swimmer with records, Top Ten achievements, and All-American honors to his credit. Reg also enthusiastically coached his teammates, many of whom shared similar successes. He founded an annual long course meet in Santa Barbara.

In addition to helping Masters swimming grow in the Santa Barbara area, Reg served as the long-time treasurer for Southern Pacific Masters (AAU Association and LMSC) and as the first USMS Treasurer from 1981-1984. He was recognized for these contributions and many more by receiving the Capt. Ransom J. Arthur M.D. Award in 1984.
