- Swimming Saves Lives
According to the Centers for Disease Control, 37 percent of American adults can’t swim the length of a pool, which puts them at risk of being one of the 10 people who drown every day in the United States.
The Swimming Saves Lives Foundation, U.S. Masters Swimming’s charitable arm, has declared the month of April “Adult Learn-to-Swim Month.” That’s when pools, lakes, and beaches are opening up for spring and summer recreation. The governors of Indiana, Nebraska, Washington, Maine, and New Jersey have already issued proclamations in support.
If you or a loved one doesn’t know how to swim, contact one of the below resources and get started! Swimming skills can save your life both by preventing drowning, and by providing you with the skills needed to make swimming for fitness part of a long-term healthy lifestyle.

How do I find adult learn-to-swim lessons?
USMS programs that offer learn-to-swim lessons
Use our Places to Swim search tool to find USMS programs in your area. Not all USMS programs offer learn-to-swim lessons, so you'll need to contact the programs and ask them if they offer lessons. You can also check our list of Swimming Saves Lives partners—these are programs that have offered adult learn-to-swim lessons in the past—to see if they're currently offering lessons. If you cannot find a program in your area, try one of these other resources:

It defines learning to swim as becoming confident, safe, and free in deep water. Strokes come after safety has been won. It is taught by 21st Century Swimming Lessons, Inc., a nonprofit organization, and its licensed instructors around the world. Instructor trainings are offered for Masters coaches and teachers.
