Dear $firstname$,
As I have corresponded with fellow swimmers, I am struck by how much everyone misses their time in the water. One published an incredible article in The New York Times titled "What I Miss Most Is Swimming."
Perhaps no group in the U.S. Masters Swimming community is affected by the social distancing requirements more than our coaches. In addition to missing time in the pool and social contacts, many have lost all or most of their livelihood. Coaches are the glue that keeps USMS together; we depend on them to keep us coming back to the pool. Whether it is providing stroke instruction to help us improve or stay injury free, workouts that are interesting and challenging, or a word of encouragement when we are feeling down, our coaches are an essential element of our swimming routine. Despite their importance, it is easy to take them for granted and forget to thank them for their efforts. During this time of stress, the Board of Directors asks members to express their gratitude by designating the week of May 4-10 as Coach Appreciation Week.
Some ideas to show your appreciation include a card or email telling your coach how his/her instruction helped you accomplish a goal; a gift card or certificate for a movie, book, or special food he/she can enjoy at home; or a special item (flowers, candy, or wine) that could be delivered to his/her home. Continuing to pay dues or donating to allow your club to continue compensating your coach might be especially meaningful. It may be difficult for clubs to arrange events to honor their coaches at this time, but they can still encourage members to act on their own or collect and bundle individual cash contributions for a more significant gift. Above all, the act of acknowledging your coach will provide some extra emotional support at this difficult time.
USMS Response to COVID-19
During its regular meeting on April 20, the board discussed the effect the pandemic will have on the organization. Compared to many commercial and nonprofit entities, USMS is in good shape. We have already registered 75 percent of budgeted members and have ample financial reserves. Nevertheless, adjustments are needed. Many will be addressed in an upcoming communication from our CEO, Dawson Hughes, but I will share a few with you here.
- The board accepted a recommendation from the CEO that his and his senior leadership team’s total compensation be reduced for 2020.
- The USMS Swimming Saves Lives Foundation paused its fundraising for the remainder of 2020. Fundraising appeals between now and the end of the year will be utilized to support broad USMS initiatives arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on membership and local issues. Members will also be encouraged to give directly to their local clubs and programs.
- No definitive decisions have been made with respect to the 2020 annual meeting or Summer Nationals. Given the known health and safety concerns, members should refrain from making travel arrangements until guidance has been issued.
Thank you for your continued support of USMS. Together we can make a stronger organization when we emerge from this crisis.
