More than a third of adults in the United States cannot swim the length of a pool, putting them at risk for becoming one of the 10 people who drown every day in this country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. U.S. Masters Swimming, with its adult learn-to-swim initiative, is on the front lines to change this.

USMS’s annual April Is Adult Learn-to-Swim Month campaign aims to reduce adult drowning risk by encouraging USMS clubs and certified adult learn-to-swim instructors to offer swim lessons in April. Many of these lessons are taught be USMS volunteers for free or at greatly reduced cost for participants, making swim lessons more accessible for more adults. In 2019, more than 1,200 adults learned how to swim in April ALTS Month programs.
