Summary Statement

I became a proud member of USMS in 1991 and began my active involvement in 1993, by attending my first Convention as a delegate representing my LMSC.  Since then, I have served as Chair of the Insurance Committee for the past ten years. I have also served on the Safety Committee and Chaired a Grievance Panel. On the LMSC level, I have worked as the Secretary, the Insurance and Safety Coordinator and served as the LMSC Chair for a Grievance Panel. During my tenure as Insurance Chair, I have served USMS through educating members on our insurance coverages and have worked to find solutions to their requests. I have worked closely with our broker to obtain the broadest insurance coverages with appropriate limits of liability, while securing the most competitive insurance premiums. Securing proper insurance coverages helps to uphold USMS’ financial integrity against claims made against our organization.

I have worked with the committees that are components of the National Operations division and understand their responsibilities. I have contributed as a Board of Director member for the past ten years, and believe that I have the ability to coordinate the activities of the committees and work as an effective Vice President of National Operations.

Response to Questions

Why are you interested in this position and why do you believe you would be a good candidate?

I have served USMS since 1993, first as a Convention Delegate representing my LMSC, then as a committee member for Insurance and Safety Education. Shortly thereafter, I was appointed Chair of the Insurance Committee. I have also served as our LMSC Secretary and Insurance and Safety Coordinator. I have served as the USMS Insurance Chair for the past ten years. During my tenure as a Committee Chair I have worked hard to educate our members about our insurance coverages while working with our broker to secure the most advantageous insurance coverages, limits and competitive premiums for our insurance programs. I have actively worked with our Legal Counsel, members of the Executive Committee, the National Office, the Safety, Finance, Rules, Championship, Registration, Legislation and Long Distance Committees and the Webmaster. I have been a co-meet director for LMSC meets. I have also served as a USMS Grievance Panel Chair and LMSC Grievance Panel Chair.

I believe that my experience as a Chair and Board of Director member for both USMS and my LMSC has evidenced my dedication and commitment to our organization and our sport and has prepared me for the role of Vice President of National Operations.

What do you consider to be the major issues facing USMS now and in the future. As a person holding an elected position within USMS, how would you address these issues?

I believe that our organization has made tremendous strides in addressing our current and future concerns regarding the size and sophistication of our organization. The next administration must take action and capitalize on the groundwork that has been laid. One of the major issues we face is hiring a competent Executive Director who understands both the business side of the organization and the fundamentals of USMS.

Our organization must continue to provide expanded services as well as educate our members on the many benefits offered through USMS membership. Effort should be expanded into supporting our smaller LMSC’s where there has been a decline in membership.

The mix of our membership continues to evolve with the addition of athletes that participate in other sports and we need to acknowledge and address all levels of interests from fitness swimmers to competitive swimmers and triathletes. All groups should be represented in our governance.

With the new structure of our Board of Directors I believe that there will be a greater amount of communication between its members and an opportunity to continue to move USMS forward.
