USMS awards All-American status every April to every Top Ten swimmer who swims the fastest time in the nation for the prior year for any event, age group and course. This presents a list of everyone who has been named All-American by USMS (or our AAU predescessor) together with a list of the sports they were named in (pool or long distance) and the years they were named. The first All-Americans were named for the year 1972. Those named each year are listed at "All-Americans by Year" .
Criteria for naming All-Americans are in the Rule Book (available from the National Office) and also at www.usms.org. The specific swims (pool only) for which All-Americans were named (since 1993) are at #1 Swims.

During the late 1990's and continuing to this day, the database is being greatly improved through the efforts of many people, especially Barbara Dunbar, Sally Dillon, Gail Roper, Lucy Johnson, Ted Haartz, Esther Lyman, Tracy Grilli and Carl House.
