1980 History of Master Swimming & Diving National Historian - Hamilton H. Anderson Associate - Mildred Anderson

After ten years, Master Swimming still has growing pains. Most of the early Master meets continue annually: many new Master meets have been added every year. Our tenth Anniversary master National Swimming meet was held in the Hall of Fame Pool in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with June Krauser, Meet Director. Her past Nat'l Meets have been successful, this was her largest with 927 contestants, many countries were represented, with about 60 from Germany. With her well organized staff this meet was a success. This meet was dedicated to Ransom J. Arthur with pictures of him from the past ten years, plus a brief summary of his past in The Contestant Program. The dinner menu was also dedicated to Ransom. The dinner was enjoyed by all; our after dinner program was THE RANSOM ARTHUR ROAST with Judge Robert Beach as M.C., who made the program interesting & kept it moving.

Those who were part of the Roast in the order they spoke are: Hamilton & Mildred Anderson, Paul Huttinger, Enid Uhrich , Buck Dawson, Ken Kimball , Bud Stewart, Buster Crabbe, F. H. "Ted" Haartz, & June Krauser . Enid Uhrich & Ed Reed, Sr. were presented the Ransom Arthur Remembering... award. The 1980 National Master Long Course Swimming Meet was held for the 2nd time with Cindy Baxter & Carol McPhearson, Meet Directors. There were about the same number of contestants, as there were in the S.C. Nat'l but not as many from other countries. It was a successful, well run meet with beautiful medals through ninth place.

The contestant program was very interesting and again dedicated to Ransom J. Arthur. Our dinner was delicious & our program short making it possible for all contestants to retire early to be ready for the Sunday events. The hotel facilities for both meets were excellent. Many Long Distance master meets were successfully held. The Postal Master Meets, The Hour Swims, & The Postal Relays are still being held, plus an added Postal Ten Minute Kick.

The National Indoor & Outdoor National Master Diving Meets were successfully conducted. The Indoor National Diving Master Meet, with David McKeehan, Meet Director, was held at The Woodlands, Tx; the Outdoor Nat'l Diving meet was held in Madera, Calif. With National master Diving Chairman, Bill McAllister, as Meet Director. John Allen Sable, better known as "Jolly" John Sable, pioneer Master diver, age 75 expired while he was in the hospital for a heart condition, during the Indoor National Diving Meet held at The Woodlands, TX.

The National AAU Convention was held in Las Vegas last year with some major changes. The Aquatic program made the decision to govern themselves. The Master Swimming Convention will be held in conjunction with the Aquatic program in Snowbird, Utah. The General AAU convention will be held in Miami, Florida. This year the Penn Mutual Insurance Co. Headed by Jon Buzzard & Bill Toomey is sponsoring Master Sports.

A word about SWIM MASTER. This publication was started in 1972 for Master Swimmers & has been published regularly every year. It covers the Calendar of events, National Meet results, Top Ten, Top Five World, & All-American swimmers, Ransom Arthur recipients, & Local area news. It publishes many articles & pictures of interest. Some one once said a picture is worth a thousand words. We have received information that a number of important items related t Master Swimming will be discussed at Snowbird. Any decisions on these items pertaining to Master swimming will be included in 1981 History of Master Swimming.
