HISTORY OF MASTERS SWIMMING - 1974
In 1974, June Krauser was our newly-elected National Chairman, Watson Lawrence-Vice President, and Bill Williams-Secretary. Enid Uhrich and Ed Reed Sr. are assisting Ted Haartz with tabulation and records.
Short Course 1974 Nationals was held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida - June Krauser, Meet Director. Long Course was held in Santa Clara - Cindy Baxter and Carol McPhearson, Meet Directors. Both meets were successful -contestants staying about 500.
Local and Regional Meets are attracting more and more older swimmers, ex-National and Olympic champions, as well as many who have never before competed. Many only learned to swim for safety and physical fitness. Many are interested in bettering their times, but the main goal of Masters Swimming is to keep older citizens physically fit, meet new friends and HAVE FUN!
In March 1974 a group of Masters Swimmers under Richard Rahe, International Chairman, swam in the first International Masters Meet in Sidney, Austalia and Matamata, New Zealand. John Henricks and Dawn Fraser swam in the meet in Sidney. It was quite dark and cold when the meet was over in Sidney. There was plenty of beer, tours, and entertainment. Hamilton and Mildred Anderson and Commander Richard Rahe, part of the group, have been active in all of the Nationals.
There are many clubs in Sidney. A full heat of 80+ men swam in the 50 m. free. Some needed to be helped up on the blocks.
Thirty-eight swimmers made the trip and tour. There were about 70 swimmers each from Sidney and Matamata. This was the end of their outdoor season.
June Krauser was the second Ransom J. Arthur recipient, following
