1982 VMST Newsletters -- Highlights and Excerpts by Betsy Durrant
In a previous newsletter, I mentioned that Chuck Wilmore had newsletters dating back to 1982! I have borrowed these newsletter and will share some of the highlights and humor.

1982 Summer Meet Schedule:
Meet director at Raleigh LC meet was Hill Carrow , who was later meet director at '84 LC Nationals in Raleigh and '92 SC Nationals in Chapel Hill.
There was a LC meet at the Naval Academy in Annapolis.
National Masters Sports Festival in Philadelphia. Forrest, Jack King , and Chuck Wilmore swam an open water event at Atlantic City as part of the Sports Festival. Pool events were at the University of Pennsylvania.
Personal notes/results:
Carl Russ, the editor, report on my results at SC Nationals in Houston. A quote: "Betsy decided to increase the tempo of her rigorous workouts (I think she got up to 1500 yards/day, 3 days/week in late April)..." A little sarcasm, I think.
Carl also mentions that Bill Bacon, now a VMST member, had just reported to duty in Norfolk with the Navy. Bill had placed second in the backstroke events at nationals. Bill was a member of DCM then.
One Hour Swim participants from VMST: Mike Hechtkopf, Pat Bird, Jack King, Carl Russ, Judy Decker, Jim Pope, Forrest Sullivan, Charlie Smith, and Calvin Barnes .
SC Meet in Greensboro: VMST won the Out-of- State trophy. Age group high point winners: Susan Lipsey , Calvin Barnes, and Judy Decker.
About Our "History on the Internet" ...
This is a note I received from
Esther Lyman
, who now maintains the USMS
national registration database. She wrote this after checking out the
Virginia History website.
This is nothing short of fantastic. And the links to actual people and their accomplishments via Carl's (USMS Committee Chairman Carl House ) complete body of work gives the whole idea added value beyond the "sum of the parts".
Enjoyed myself hugely reading it, especially since I went to one of the UVA swim camps ?? can't remember which year ?? and roomed in with Dot Donnelly and her partners?in?crime, Nancy Phillips , Helen Offenhauser and Ruth Billard?Morrill from Connecticut and have very fond memories of the TN swimmin' women (and they did a lot more than swim), and trudging along the railroad tracks to practice in the early morning hours. Still have one of the nails from the tracks as a paperweight. Will send you a really funny story I have from there when I have more time.
Betsy, thanks from all of us for making this huge effort, either writing this or getting people like Chuck to contribute. It would be great if other LMCSs could find people who have the luxury of time, guts, and skills to do the history of their own LMCS. THANKS.
Some people, I'm sure, have wondered how I ended up in my "job" with the organization, but I can assure you I was properly trained both in the intricacies of the sport and the enjoyment of all aspects of Masters.
Best, Esther Lyman, Registrar, USMS National Office.
