All American Recognition, by June Krauser , August 15, 1998.
1973 -- Have to have won 4 events in SC and/or LC National Championships in Group II Age Group - 5 yr. up to 80 and over. No LD under Masters Swimming and no Masters under LD Swimming.
1974 -- Same as 1973 plus if a swimmer placed lst in 4 events in the Top Ten Times. Masters under LD Swimming - At least one man and one woman from each age group shall be selected based upon the results of National Championships of which there was only one event with ages to 65 and older.
1975 1976 -- Swimming and LD same as 1974.
1977 -- Swimming changed to anyone with a lst place in Top Ten Times was an All American. Masters still under LD and age changed for every 5 yr. up to 80 & over.
1978 -- Swimming the same as 1977. Masters under LD added the One Hour Swim to the National Championship level so now 2 events for LD.
1979 -- Swimming same as 1978. Masters still under LD but now have 4 National Championships: 1. Quarter Mile straight-away; 2. Open Water LD; 4. One Hour Swim for Distance.
1980 -- Swimming same as 1979 but now age groups are up to 90+. Age groups correspond to swimming and still 4 National Championships as in 1979.
1981 1982 -- Swimming and LD same as 1980.
1983 -- Swimming same as 1982. LD now has 7 National Championships: 1) Quarter Mile Straight-away; 2) OW LD (l.5 - 3.0 mi); 3) OW LD (3.5 - 5.0 mi); 4) LD Team Event; 5) Marathon Type LD (over 6 mi); 6) Postal One Hour Swim; 7) Postal 10K.
1984 l985 l986 l987 -- Swimming and LD same as 1983.
1988 -- Swimming same as 1987. LD now under Masters Swimming. All American is now: The National champion in each age group of each Individual National Championship LD swimming event shall qualify as a member of the All American Team for the Calendar Year.
1989 -- USMS now has their own rule book. Swimming is the same as 1988 except now the age groups go to 95+. LD now has 8 National Championships. Added is the Postal 6000 yard event.
1990 1991 1992 -- Swimming and LD same as 1989.
1993 -- Swimming now has 5 year age groups as high as necessary.
1994 through 1998 -- Swimming and LD same as 1993.
