CHAMPIONS...Then and Now

KEN HAMMER

After making high school All-American in the 100 free at Deowney High School, Calif., Ken went on to set the school record at Stanford in the 50 free. He swam with Stanford's 1968 national record-holding 4 x 100 freestyle relay team. Ken placed fifth in the NCAA 50 free. Swimming for Phillips 66, he placed third in the 100 free & swam on their champion freestyle relay team at the ‘68 Indoor Nationals. He also qualified for the ‘68 Olympic tryouts. In 1971, Ken spent part of his Army service swimming on the champion CISM team.

CINDY BAXTER

National Record & Pacific Association record in 200 meter butterfly, 400 IM, 50 meter Breastroke. Past Master records in 100 yd Breastroke & 200 yard butterfly.

BERNA BENNETT

Berna swam for Los Angeles Club during their peak years 1948 to 1952 & culminated her "Senior" swimming career at the ‘52 Olympic Trials.

CARL YATES

Carl Yates started swimming in competition when he was nineteen years old. He swam for University of Connecticut. Sampson College in Sampson, New York. University of Miami, Florida and San Jose State College. He was first a long distance swimmer. Carl was sixth in the Senior Nationals in distance in 1948. He held college records in 220 yard, 440 yard, 1500 meter. He held the record in the 220 yard jointly with Art Lambert. In 1955 Carl was picked by the coaches of all California colleges as the outstanding swimmer.

ARTHUR HARGRAVE

Swam many ocean & river swims in the late 1920's. 1925 Nationals, Seattle. National Junior Mile, 1928. Backstroke records in PAA & Far Westerns.

JEFF LAPIERRE

Jeff Lapierre swam when he was six years old in his first A.A.U. meet for Add Janes at Santa Clara. He continued to swim in competition until he was 15 years old. When he was nine years old he swam for the Palo Alto Swim Club under Dick Takamoto and John Williams Remembering... . When hew was 12 & 14 years old he ranked in the top six for the age group Junior Olympics in 1961 & 1963. Jeff is now manager of Add Janes Swim School & coach of Add Janes Swim Club. He has been involved in teaching & coaching for ten years.

JUNE KRAUSER

Chairman, National Masters Swimming Committee, June Krauser swam in competition form age six to twenty. She represented the Rivera Club which won National AAU Championships (Long Course) in 1941, 1942 & 1943. She won the 220 yard Breastroke Championship in Chicago in 1943 at age 16. Active as AAU volunteer since 1959, she served as Association secretary & registration chairman. She has chaperoned three USA teams: New Zealand, 1966: in 1970, European Tour to Austria & Czechoslovakia: & in 1974, USA vs German Democratic Republic in Concord, Calif. June served as Swimming Rules chairman, Junior Olympic Rules Chairman, & International Competition Chairman. She also served as an Olympic Swimming Committee Chairman.

JIM MALLEY

>From 1961 to 1963 Jim Malley swam at Bellermine High School in San Jose. Later he swam with Johnny Williams & Dick Takamoto of the Palo Alto Aquatic Club. He was a former All- American Swimmer at College of San Mateo, & he placed third in the Senior College State Tournament in 1964. At Colorado State University he broke the pending American record in the 200 yard Backstroke & the 100 yard Backstroke. At Dartmouth he was a finalist in the 100 meter Backstroke, doing 1:01.3. He also did coaching in Greece.

SALLY SCHOLER

National Record, 50 yard butterfly, 1974. Pacific Association Record in 200 meter Individual Medley & 50 meter Freestyle.

SYLVIA BAILEY

Sylvia Bailey Remembering... at the age of 68 has been a Rinconada master competitor since January 1973. Although not a former competitive swimmer, she holds or has held National records in 15 different events.

ALLAN CARTWRIGHT

Allan Cartwright swam at Birmingham High School in Los Angeles. He swam one year at Ohio State where he participated in the NCAA Championships. He took third in the 200 Butterfly & was on a 400 Freestyle relay team that placed third. Allan was an All American High School Swimmer & an All American College Swimmer. He is among the Top Ten Masters Swimmers in 100 Fly, 200 IM, & 100 Back.

TOM MACEDO

After swimming in high school competition, Tom swam for San Jose State & competed in NCAA championships in 1960 placing 3rd in the 200 Back & 4th in the 100 Back. Tom holds the 200 Back records from the 1973 Masters short course meet. DR. JAMES C. BOHAN, JR.

All-American in 1957 in the 100 & 200 yard Backstroke & in 1958 All-American in the 100 in Miami University in Ohio. All-Eastern Champion in the 100 & 200 yard Backstroke & in the 150 yard IM.

BARBARA JENSON REEVE

Ridge Park Swim Club: Chicago, Illinois. Barbara Reeve:Former Olympian in 1948 Team. 100m backstroke for the Crystal Plunge. (Barbara Jensen). Member of Helms Hall of Fame. All American master Team 1972. 1973 National record holder in 40-44 defending the 100 & 200m backstroke.

JIM REILLY

Jim has been swimming for forty-seven years, starting at 10 years old. In 1933, when he was a junior at Rutgers University, he was Interscholastic National Champion. He was Captain of the Rutgers swim team. In 1939, he joined the New York Athletic Club where he was a member of a relay team that included Walter Apence,Tom McDermott, & Peter Fick & set the world record for the 400 yard indoor relay. In 1947 he was on a relay team that took 3rd place in the National Indoors. Jim was swim coach at the University of Virginia from 1950-1958, coached Mento Circus Club & Palo Alto Golf & Country Club.

GAIL ROPER(GAIL PETERS)

Gail Roper started swimming at the age of four in Trenton, New Jersey. She competed at the age of 17 & won her first race on her 18th birthday. She swam for Walter Reed Hospital under Jim Campbell & won her 1st National at age 23. Gail won eight National Championship indoor & outdoor meets-Individual Medley, 100 Breast & 200 Breast. She won the Helsinki Olympic trial in the 200m Fly-breast. Gail won twenty-five National AAU Championships in senior competition. In 1953 she ranked first in the world in the 100m Breast. Today she is the top Masters' records holder. She has won 22 National Championships. She has been awarded the Pacific Association most valuable Master Swimmer award. She has also been nominated for the Sullivan award-and is in the Swimming Hall of Fame.

CAROL TAIT MACPHERSON

Carol Tait Macpherson started swimming at the age of seven in Palo Alto. Pierre Hathaway saw potential in Carol & suggested she go to the Santa Clara Swim Club. In 1951 with Geroge Haines, Carol went to her first Nationals in Oregon & placed 5th in the 400 & 800 freestyle. The following year she went to Florida for the Short Course Nationals & won the 500 & 250 Freestyle. Carol was George's first National Champion. She placed 3rd in the Pan American Games 1954. She was All-American 1954-1955. She is in the National Hall of Fame & the Santa Clara Hall of Fame for 1969. Carol holds Masters National Championships, 1973-1974 in the following events:1650,200, 500 Freestyle, 200 Breast, 200 Backstroke, 200 & 400 IM, 200 Fly, & 50 Breast. Today she teaches swimming & with Cindy Baxter coaches the Rinconada Masters.

DOROTHY LEONARD DONNELLY

Dorothy Donnelly Remembering... lives in New Britain, Conn. She represented the US in the 1940 Olympics. She won national championships in the 220yd freestyle in 1939 & 1941, & she was on the All-American Team 1940-41. Dorothy's Masters Swimming record includes 1974 championships in Short Course 100 & 200 IM, 100 Backstroke, with new record times established. She is a member of the 45+ Mixed Relay championship team. Now at 52, she is an avid competitor with the Connecticut Masters Swim Club.

MILDRED ANDERSON

Mildred Anderson was Midwest & Gulf AAU 100 yard Breastroke Champion. In 1956, she was on the Women's Olympic Committee. She was Master National All American in 1972 & 1973. She currently holds records in the 100& 200 yard Breast, 100 yard Fly, & 100 & 200m Breast.

HAM ANDERSON

In Midwest Intercollegiate competition, Ham Anderson swam to championships in the 220 freestyle & 100 yard backstroke. In 1974, he was champion in Masters Indoor competition in both the 500 & 1650 yard freestyle.
