The Process for Maintaining the SwimGold Photo Gallery

The process for collecting, preserving and displaying images has evolved. Here's what it looks like as of 12/31/03 as we distribute a CD with all of our historical archives and 3400 images. This is done under the auspices of the USMS History & Archives Committee of which Barbara Dunbar is Chairperson.

  1. The following steps are routinely and frequently done by Carl.
    1. Original art is maintained in a folder called "c:\SwimPixArt\". "c:\SwimPixArt\" contains images of the highest quality we can get. When new art is sent to us, as Duane and Karlyn have recently, it is integrated into the image library in the steps outlined below. (whenever these steps are performed). Now and then "c:\SwimPixArt\" will be backed up on tape or multiple DVD's (30 gb is 5 or 6 DVD's or 40+ CD's).
    2. Copies appropriate for web use are created & annotated with IMGTOOLS and stored in c:\SwimPix\...\. Annotation is possible because the file called "imgdb.sf" is updated by Marcia Cleveland et al. If there is no annotation in imgdb.sf, then the thumbnail gets no annotation and the web image gets "Copyright © 2003. Permission is required for use."
    3. Thumbnails are created & annotated with IMGTOOLS and stored in c:\SwimPix\...\t\.
    4. HTML index files are created with "CreateImageIndex" &/or "CreateIndexIndex" so one can browse them anytime they are put on a CD.
  2. The following steps are handled by Marcia Cleveland in a schedule & process yet to be developed.
    1. Annotate images using IMGDB.
    2. Seek releases from photographers and swimmers.
  3. Someone will develop distribution policy (probably Barbara or Carl).
  4. Someone will develop a budget policy and/or plan to cover costs (probably Barbara or Carl).
  5. Someone will consider how or if the Photo Gallery will be integrated with our archives on the USMS server.
