The USMS Photo Gallery
The USMS History and Archives Committee has been gathering photos of our swimmers for several years. We have approximately 3600 photographs at this time through 12/31/02. Here are our top priorities for this project.
- Use what we've learned to improve the quality, preservation and presentation of our images. Carl House is taking the lead on this. Click on "Images" below to learn more about this effort.
- Create a database of annotation so we can search for photographs and find good documentation for them. Wayne Smith, Katie Cooper, Howard Rutenberg and Debbie Cavanaugh will be improving our annotation while Carl House will manage the development of the database. Click on "Annotation" below to learn more about this effort.
While we don't have the legal right to use many of our photos without getting permission from the photographers, the photos are being preserved and will be available at ISHOF and on a CD for whoever needs them. As rapidly as we get permission from photographers, photos which are presently restricted will be placed among those on-line and available for use. Our goal is to move 1000 photos from the restricted category to being available for use. At that point, we expect to have somewhere near 2000 photos available for use for celebrating swimmers prominent in USMS in this era.
Remember Archives are Forever, and someday in the future there won't be any restrictions on the use of the photos. We expect USMS to exist 100 years from now and these photos will record this moment in its history.
