The most important progress we need to make in presenting images is that we need to develop a good way of integrating the image with its annotation. We have three ways of presenting groups of images ("packed", "stacked" & "floating"), and it may be that none are satisfactory. Here are examples and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
../pix/meldyck/indexp.htm - These are Mel Dyck's images "packed". This presentation method uses space well and it works well in all browsers, but it has very limited usefulness because it does not include annotation.
../pix/meldyck/indexs.htm - These are Mel Dyck's images "stacked". This presentation method works in all browsers and can include annotation, but it is very wasteful of space.
../pix/meldyck/indexf.htm - These are Mel Dyck's images "floating". This presentation method uses space well and includes annotation, but it does not work well in Mac computers or in older Netscape browsers. (A number of complaints have been received; new tests were recently made on a Mac with IE5 and Netscape 6.2.)
For discussion of a possible new way, see: A New Method of Image Annotation is Needed. The result of the proposed new method will be similar to the following when there is a substantial amount of text available. When the text will fit below the photo, the right hand cell will not appear. Using this method, each photo and its text will take up the amount of space they require and will not waste space they don't need. It may not be possible to place internal links in the way shown below when we use the proposed new method.
| New Legal Counsel Appointed: The USMS Executive Committee is pleased to announce the appointment of Patty Powis of Virginia as the new Legal Counsel of USMS. Patty has been on the Ad Hoc Legal Counselors Committee and Safety Education Committee since 1998, and recently concluded a year as chair of the Safety Education Committee. She is also President of Virginia Masters Swim Team and Long Distance Chair for the Virginia LMSC. Patty graduated from the college of William and Mary in 1983, and law school at the University of Vriginia in 1987. She has been practicing law for 15 years, and ultimately merged her background in sports with her legal career two years ago, when she went to work for Virginia Commonwealth University as associate athletic director for student services. Patty's main responsibility is making sure that VCU's athletic program complies with NCAA rules. She also teaches a sports law class to undergraduate sports management students, plus a class on college athletics to graduate students in VCU's sport leadership program. In addition, she lectures on legal issues related to sports as well as Title IX and gender equity in athletics. Patty expressed her appreciation previous Legal Counsel Jack Geoghegan for the many years of hard work, wisdom and good humor he has brought to the Executive Committee. "Jack" has provided a great example with his wise counsel and seasoned legal advice," said Powis. "He's been very helpful to me over the last few months, both by giving advice and by stepping back and letting me make legal calls under his watchful eye. Jack has given so much to USMS. I can only hope to make a fraction of the contributions he has by my service as Legal Counsel." |
We should also agree upon standards for images in terms of quality and file size. Current policy is discussed briefly below.
