Germantown Maryland Masters -- 10
The Germantown team was started in 1993 with three swimmers and one non- swimming spouse making up the charter membership. The objective was to eventually bring coached workouts to Germantown. There were no coached masters workouts within 10 miles of here at that time.
We grew slowly at first, from 4 members in 1993 to 8 in 1994. In late 1994 we started getting 2-4 people together at a time for workouts without a coach. In the fall, Mark Ward started coaching this small group informally. By January, 1995, he was officially our head coach and things started to take off. We had 36 members by the end of 1995, 65 in 1996, and 84 in 1997.
Our growth has been a direct result of the quality coaching provided by Mark and his assistants. Coaches lead the workouts from the deck, not the water. They pay equal attention to fitness and competitive swimmers. Mark and the other coaches always have more than one workout going on to accommodate different ages, speeds, and levels of experience.
Our workouts only last an hour, which is shorter than most teams' workouts. This seems to be just right for most of our swimmers. While we could all stand more time in the water, the one hour workouts allow parents with children to spend part of the evening at home, and others to plan activites other than swimming.
