What is USMS?
USMS is a national, membership-operated nonprofit organization that provides membership benefits to nearly 60,000 Masters swimmers across the country. These benefits include insurance, SWIMMER magazine, sanctioned events, and many others. USMS and its 52 Local Masters Swimming Committees provide direct support to more than 1,500 smaller clubs and workout groups. Structure and organization of USMS programs vary and are driven by factors such as pool availability, instructor or coach availability, community support, and finances. The majority of locations offering USMS programs have coaches on deck. Coaches write workouts and provide feedback and instruction.
Participation and Activities
Participation is open to any adult (18 and over) interested in achieving or maintaining fitness and health through swimming. All ability levels are welcome and most programs have Masters coaches who provide structured workouts for training and improvement.
USMS provides coach certification for Masters swimming coaches. This ensures that coaches are aware of the latest stroke techniques and effective teaching methods for all the different types of Masters swimmers who participate. These include beginners and experienced swimmers, and those who swim for health, for triathlons, or for competition.
Many programs offer stroke and technique clinics, workshops, and instruction.
Most programs have regular social functions. The camaraderie found in Masters swimming programs is legendary.
