Ridley High School, 10 AM

Since our Y Masters coach was out of town, the RHS pool didn't open til 10AM. Of course, I was the only Masters swimmer to show up. So, I had two lanes to myself while the Y team was practicing in the next 4 lanes. Of course, I only needed one lane. Coach John left a workout for us and I even abbreviated that workout. Today was just about getting in the pool and just stretching out. I didn't worrry about doing any fast stuff.

700 warmup

2 x 100 back on 1:30, worked on stroke count
3 x 75s breast on 1:15
3 x 50s fly on :55
75 recovery

2 x 100 back on 1:30, worked on.....
2 x 75s breast on 1:15
2 x 50s fly on :55
50 recovery

300 went 3:30 but focused on stroke count. Some laps, I was able to hold 13 per 25 and some were my typical 14 to 15 strokes per 25

100 warmdown

Total Yardage-2250 yards

Senior Champs Musings

Here is the realtime results for Senior Champs.

http://maswim.org/realtime/10scmids/

My one training mate asked what I was swimming next weekend. Of course, I told him and thought that I was doing too many events. The events that I am doing(400 IM, 200 fly, 500 free, 200 back, 1650) is actually a light schedule for me. I could have done the 100 fly on Friday and the 200 IM on Sunday but I choose to cut that from the schedule. In addition, I hate doing them in Yards anyway. I signed up for the 500 free because I just missed the QT for the 200 breast. Also, you are only allowed to do one Bonus(aka non QT time) event so I choose the 200 back as a warmup for the 1650. Too much! This is just the right amount of events for me.

I was excited about today's workout as I heard it was going to be a toughie. Here was the workout:

10 minute warm up

Set I - 4 X:
- 1 X 25 kick @ :25
- 1 X 50 drill @ :50
- 2 X 75 swim @ 1:15 build
- 1 X 50 drill @ :50
- 1 X 25 kick @ :25
(nice warm up set, combined everything)

Set II:
- 1 X 100 kick @ 1:50
- 1 X 200 swim pull buoy @ 2:40
- 1 X 300 swim @ 4:20
- 3 X 500 swim descend @ 6:20
- 1 X 300 swim @ 4:20
- 1 X 200 swim pull buoy @ 2:40
- 1 X 100 kick @ 1:50
(I really wanted to make the 500s meaningful. Went 6:07, 5:58 and 5:48. All of us really cut way back on the first one knowing it would be more fun to really go after each other on the last.)

We got done in about 65 minutes so we decided to spend some time on the blocks. We did 3 X 25 all out and 1 X 100 all out. Then, being children, we did underwater competitions.

Then, the best part of the week, breakfast with the team.

I am officiating the meet this afternoon. #1 made finals last night in the 100 breast and placed third, so good news there. Here she is ready to roll:

Friday 03/19/2010: AM Swim & PM Gym, both in Mesa

Well my back problems have mostly gone away. After a horrible day yesterday, I was determined I would sleep last night. I rarely take a sleep aid before laying down, but after I hardly slept Wed night, and still in pain, I took 2 generic Tylenol PM last night and was in bed around 9pm. I started watching some tv and thought, "I'll never get to sleep," and the next thing I remember I woke up to pee at around 3:30 am. Since I was up, I took 2 normal Tylenol, and when my alarm went off at 4:45, I felt mostly fine.

oh, before I continue, are there any other Jeopardy fans out there? Last night was their monthly celebrity night, they had Anderson Cooper, Cheech Marin (of Cheech and Chong), and Aisha Tyler. Strangely out of that bunch the big winner was Cheech. Alex noted that Cheech was the winner of the very first celebrity Jeopardy, whenever that was. But how embarrassing for Anderson. Wolf Blitzer was on a few months ago, and he did even worse.

so anyway, I made it to swim this morning with the team, Mesa Kino Aquatic Center (SCY)
both Paul and Laura on deck coaching

warm-up--
800 choice/various
4 x 100 @ :10 rest

set 1--
200 FAST @ :10 rest
800 cruise @ :10 rest
4 x 25 @ :40

set 2--
100 fast @ :10 rest
600 faster cruise @ :10 rest
4 x 100 build @ 1:40

set 3--
800 fast, done w/10 sec rest every 100
4 x 25 underwater kick @ :40

200 easy warm-down

ttl: 4500 yards

notes--
* thought I'd go and do an 'easy' set. but since I'm one of the faster people there (it is a pretty slow group), everyone just tells me to get in the fast lane. oh well....
* it was exceptionally crowded, I had never seen so many people there. wetsuits were out in force (triathletes). every single lane was setup (I started right under the diving boards in 13 feet water), and most lanes had 3 people. I'd guess a total of 50 or so people.
* there was some sort of kids/high school meet at the pool right after. a few of the coaches swim too, and joined our workout. Bowen Johnson (Ron's son) was there; I used to swim with him at ASU, now he swims at the Phoenix Swim Club.
* for set 1, my 200 fast wasn't; I did around 2:28. some guy came in our lane (we already had 3) and did the opposite of a save up sammy...went all out up front. he lapped me on the 800. I moved over after that and led the next lane.
* for the broken 800, I was feeling somewhat good, did the first 100 in 1:09, and kept most of the 100s around 1:12 to 1:15. mister blow your speed was well behind.
* chatted with some of the tri guys after. of course they offer to let me ride/run with them, but I said I mostly prefer to do that stuff solo.

had one of my rare lunch out today. the guy I ran with last summer, who still swims at ASU, contacted me a few days ago. I completely forgot until he emailed me this morning. had a nice lunch at Pei Wei, and it was surprisingly not busy.

then when I was getting ready to leave work, I decided to go to the 24 Hour club in Mesa to test out the pool. more on that later, but after I go there I always say I really should go there more. notes--
Elliptical: 15:00, cal 187, 1.59 miles, crossramp 8, resistance 7
Incline bench: 1 x 15 x 45, 2 x 12 x 115, 2 x 8 x 135, 1 x 6 x 165
Freemotion dual cable cross chest fly: 1 x 15 x 40, 1 x 15 x 50, 2 x 12 x 60, 2 x 8 x 70
Multi machine front lat pulldown: 1 x 15 x 90, 3 x 10 x 135, 1 x 8 x 150
Preacher curls: 1 x 15 x 18, 3 x 10 x 68, 1 x 6 x 78
Multi machine seated row: 1 x 15 x 90, 3 x 10 x 135
Multi machine standing triceps rope pulldown: 1 x 15 x 50, 2 x 8 x 70
Lifefitness abdominal: 2 x 15 x 130
Hoist rock-it abs: 1 x 25 x 90, 2 x 15 x 110
Leg raise: 3 x 15
Plank: 3 min done as a min normal, 30 sec right, 30 sec normal, 30 sec left, 30 sec normal

Changed, went in pool, did mostly easy 500m swim.

notes--
* I was suddenly STARVING when I first got to the gym. I guess that's what eating Pei Wei for lunch does to you. Somehow I managed to control my cravings.
* I didn't take the elliptical quite as fast as normal; I could feel some stiffness in my back, but it was tolerable.
* I can't remember, but that incline bench may be a PR. I did have a spot, but I don't think he even had to touch the bar.
* HATED the Lifefitness abdominal machine. there's no holders for your feet. I tried to put mine under the seat, but they just wouldn't stay still. strange feeling.
* LOVED that Hoist Rock-It ab machine. most of the movement seems to come from your hips, and I think using this would really help my dolphin kick.
* almost bailed on the leg raises, my back was noticeable on this. plank felt good, stretching out.
* this pool is one of the strangest I've been in. I did swim in it last year, but I really couldn't remember. I'm 85% certain now that it is in fact 25 METERS long. of course my stroke could be off with my back, and having just lifted, but it seemed I consistently took 1 to 3 extra strokes than normal, even when I went slow and tried to be the most efficient.
* the pool is just 3 lanes, with stairs in, but just 1 lane line. I was lucky to be in the 1 lane inside the line, but the waves were really extreme. Some guy did 2-3 strokes of fly from across the pool and I really felt it.
* I'd guess that if you can swim a 100 free on 1:40 in this pool, you should easily be able to hold 1:30 for 100 yds in a normal pool, maybe even 1:25. I'm spoiled by swimming one of the most efficient pools in the state.
* generally this gym just has more than the one near my house. more machines, more treadmills, ellipticals, etc. tv's that you can see from the weights area. and there's a Rubio's right in the parking lot, made an easy stop to pickup dinner.

so long as the back holds, I'm planning to get somewhat back on track this weekend. an hour ride tomorrow afternoon.
I'd like to try another run on Sunday. It will be 3 weeks since I've really run. my quad doesn't feel back to 100%, but if it is 80+, I'll do 3 miles, then hopefully a 2+ hour ride.

prior to yesterday, I had worked out for 10 days without break. and several days were 2 workouts a day.

I just did a meet-ish warm up as well:
Swim/SCY/Solo:

400 swim
200 kick
200 fly drills

Main Sets:

4 x (4 x 25)
#1 = easy speed fly
#2 = EZ
#3 = shooter on back
#4 = EZ

50 EZ

3 x (25 AFAP + 75 EZ)

Total: 1550

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Still feeling plagued by allergies, but whatevah. Mr. Fort, who is now home, said, "You better ratchet down your expectations." I laughed because I don't really have any for this meet. Which, in reality, is kind of a bummer because I have always enjoyed this meet and swum pretty well. I will still enjoy the meet! But I have no idea how my 50s will stack up timewise. And that is complicated by the suit change.
Speaking of which, HOLY CRAP!!!!!! I opened the box with my B70 Nero TX in it, and it looks like it was made for my 9 year old. No jokes. I showed it to Mini, who laughed. It looks demonstrably smaller than her/our Speedo Elite suit. When I held them side by side, there seemed a few inches difference in length. (So perhaps Big Noodler is right and the suits stretch out ASAP and are no good after a couple meets?) I am going to bribe Mini to try it on for me the first time, at least that's my plan. It looks like it would take multiple tries for me ... The straps look stretchier than the Pro and, like the new Speedo, there are no seams.
Edit: OK, Mini got the TX on in 5 minutes. I have no idea how she does that ... It seems to fit/look pretty much like the Speedo. It looks smaller in the chest area (good for me) and the legs are almost transparent, so I think the fabric is slightly different there than on the Speedo. Alright, my turn to try it now shortly. :afraid: It will take longer b/c I have a bigger ass from all those squats. Lovely. I'm sure Julie's "2 words" will aptly describe the result. :afraid:
And yay! Glad the meet doesn't start till 3! Sleepin' in. :)
Oh, I asked my doc about ExFuse7, which I noted yesterday some athletes were using as recovery tonics. He said:
"Basically it is a good drink, but experts say it may not be any better then
antioxidants in foods like blueberries and blackberries/ pinapple and other high
antioxidants. Antioxidants by these industries are measured by Orick value
(spelling? ) which works well in the petri dish but no one has shown this
relationship to be true in the human cell or body. None of these products are
100% organic or standardized fully."
I just abbreviated the workout today which meant doing fast 50s instead of 100s and just swimming every other 100 for the extra rest. One of the college kids put the workout together and it was very interesting and different. Too bad, I couldn't do the whole thing.
Warmup
400 free, 300 pull, 200 kick
8 x 75s, various intervals, can't remember.
100 fast, went I guess 1:02
break
100 fast, went maybe 1:01
break
50 recovery
3 x 100 pull on 1:25, moderate
50 fly fast, :31
break
50 back fast, :32
break
50 free fast, :29
8 x 25s on :30
25 easy/fast
25 fast/easy
25 easy
25 fast
5 x 50s(at 500 stroke rate) on 1:00
5 x 50s on 1:00, did this as warmdown and just worked on stroke, average about 11 on 1st lap, and 13 on 2nd lap. That is good for me since I have a "T-Rex" wingspan. I usually average about 15 stroke per 25 and 55 million strokes per 50 LCM lap!
Did a few starts, a few turns, and worked on my finish a little.
Total Yards-3000 yards
Felt pretty good today. Alot better than Monday and Tuesday. Tomorrow, I will take it easy and do more a warmup practice since Saturday is my lowkey day. The good thing is that I will have the space to work on turns and starts.
I will be able to get my 1000 split into the SWIMS database. Now, I will have the option of either the 1000 or 1650/800 or 1500 at QT meets. I really want to get some good 800 races in this summer.
We are moving offices in a week, and big red boxes were dumped in everyone's cube to pack up. Well most people only need a box or two, so I borrowed some boxes and helped out a guy on vacation pack.
The second picture is looking over the top of the cube wall.
I'm still feeling tired and the best way that I can come up with to describe how my shoulders feel is grumpy. Has anyone tried Arnica? The kind that dissolves under your tongue? Just curious. Someone recommended it to me this morning.
I told Jeff at the pool last night that it was much easier to train for the long distance stuff. Sets of 6 x 1000 were way easier than his high quality sets. And my shoulders held up much better when training at a slower pace but swimming longer sets. I am starting to think that my body has just had enough of this kind of training. But I know it's good for me and I'll swim faster. I am officially going to stop making fun of sprinters now!
Got my TYR Tracer Light in the mail. Let's just say that this body is not cut out for a kneeskin style suit. But I already knew that, didn't need a swimsuit to tell me that! Oh well. Gotta go with the flow, right?
Thursday Swim at AHC
500 swim
4 x 100 drill/swim IM order
2 times:
100 - 75 - 50 - 25 kick
2 times:
100 - 75 - 50 - 25 swim
100 warm down
2000 meters total
Friday Swim with Rockville Masters
400 warm up
6 x 75 free/back mix on 1:15
5 x 50 kick
3 x 150 free
3 x 50 free
1 x 100 free
100 warm down
2000 meters total
I think this is what we did. I can't remember. Must be the lack of coffee.
Albatross Open is tomorrow. I'm still not sure how to fell about that. I think I'll wear my FS1 recordbreaker. I'm always comfortable in that one. And it's not like I am the least bit rested for this meet.
And looks like SCM Top Ten are final....WOO-HOO! I got in there in 200 back and 400 IM this year! Not bad for swimming all of one SCM meet last year.
When that alarm went off at 5:00 am this morning I wanted to cry. But, then I cried tears of joy as I realized it was for my wife who was headed off to the gym. That last 70 minutes of sleep were awesome.
Had six guys swim this morning, each of us with a lane to ourselves. We did the following:
600 warm up
14 X 50 @ 1:00 V02Max
9 X 25 @ 1:00 kick (15 gurgle/10 EZ)
Cool down
On the 50s I went :30 on the first one and :28 on the last one and all :29s in between.
I finally signed up for the meet in Atlanta yesterday. The sign up, I have to say, is super slick. I really liked the way you could click on your pre loaded meet times. Unfortunately, my last meet wasn't loaded but this is a great feature. I'm doing the 1000/500/200/100/50 back and the 50 free is my sixth event. I bought the four day $30 parking pass even though I can walk to the pool. I figure someone will need it over the weekend.
I had decided to not do any meets between now and Atlanta but got rooked into going to a meet in Hillsborough, NC on May 1. It's a two day meet but four of us are going for Saturday only. I won't wear my fastest suits and probably won't swim any of my Atlanta events. I go full-on superstitious about stuff like that. There's no substitute for racing, at any age.
Decided to bring son to Atlanta to see the Cyclorama. Since Atlanta is a 2 hour drive from where we live, decided to make it an overnight trip. Did a little bit of a family history thing as well, pointing out to son that his great-great-grandfather was involved with the design and construction of the houses around Grant Park. Also took a little drive through my grandfather's neighborhood over near Inman Park/Little Five Points. He actually grew up across the street from Asa Candler of the Coca-Cola family.
Took him over to see Emory which is where I went to college. First time for him to see Emory. I figured it was about time as I was the third generation that went there. Walked around the campus a bit and let him take in the sights. It was a gorgeous day. Later, I got a swim in the pool.
It dawned on me that 25 years ago on the Thursday night of NCAA DIII Nationals (which is tonight), I was swimming in the very same pool. In fact, it was the night that my 200 medley relay team (I swam fly) got in the top 6 in finals and thus, we were recognized as NCAA All-Americans. I wish I could have remembered what lane we were in when we accomplished this feat, but I did swim on the end of the pool where I recall that we raced. I finished my workout around 7:40 p.m. which would have been around the time we would have been swimming 25 years ago. Weird.
For my workout, I took advantage of having normal pool temps, backstroke flags, wide lanes, and a good pool. Did a challenging backstroke set and surprisingly felt pretty good. Maybe it was a mental thing.
I seem to be struggling with my fly these days. My fly sprints were as fast as my back sprints. I have an odd feeling that my back is not getting faster, but that my fly is getting slower. Maybe there is an explanation for it all.
Warm-up: 300 easy
4 x 25 fly drill: 3 rt/3 lt on :30
Backstroke set - no rest between subsets:
4 x 50 on :45
2 x 100 on 1:30
1 x 200 on 3:00
2 x 100 on 1:30
4 x 50 on :45
100 easy
4 x 50 - 25 AFAP fly/25 easy on 2:00
100 easy
3 x 50 - 25 AFAP back/25 easy on 2:00
150 easy
2100 SCY
