Meet Your President Jeff Moxie

Jeff Moxie, a Masters swim coach and current president of USMS, started swimming at the age of six, continuing through college and then later as a Masters member. While swimming in high school Jeff set a 100 breaststroke record in 1976 which lasted until January of 2009. He was the team captain in both his junior and senior years. He attended Grove City College in Grove City, Pa., and graduated in 1980 with a major in accounting. Jeff also was a two-time All-American in the 200 breaststroke and 400 medley relay. He was considered one of the greatest breaststrokers in the college's history and held the college records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, and the 400 IM. He was team captain for his junior and senior years. On January 14, 2004, Jeff was inducted into the Grove City College Swimming Hall of Fame.

Jeff coached both a USA Swimming and a high school program for five years while living in Ohio. In addition, he was both a high school and college swimming official during that time. Jeff got involved in Masters swimming in 1989 when he moved from Ohio to California. “I was looking for something to do to attempt to get back in shape and visited the Daland Swim School” Jeff said. “After swimming there a couple of years I met Peter Daland who was responsible for helping me with training and getting me back into swimming. From there, you could say the rest is history.” Jeff’s favorite type of set in a workout, as both a swimmer and coach, involves “descending intervals on a set until no one can make the interval.” Jeff believes this type of set stretches both the physical and mental boundaries of a swimmer.

Jeff attended his first USMS convention in 1997. He served on the USMS Finance Committee from 2003 to 2007, chaired the Finance Committee from 2006 to 2007 and was elected USMS treasurer in 2008. He received the Dorothy Donnelly USMS Service Award for outstanding service to USMS in 2004, and in 2009 he ran for and was elected president of USMS.

Over the years Jeff has also been active in other non-profits. He was a board member of a non-profit that assisted in bringing back the Channel Islands Fox from the brink of extinction, was a board member of a low cost spay and neuter organization which helped to reduce dog and cat euthanasia by more than 70% in the Simi Valley, Calif., area and helped to start a new Masters swimming and triathlon club in Ventura County, Calif.

In addition, Jeff and his late wife of 29 years, Paula, were active in the Southern California Keeshond Rescue organization helping to rescue over 500 dogs during the last two decades and personally adopting 14 of those during that time. In addition, Paula was active in the adult figure skating world. While not only being part of the creation of the adult figure skating program in the United States and internationally, she was a successful participant winning multiple national and international titles. Jeff happily served as sounding board, sometime coach, concierge, chaufeur, travel agent, porter, etc. for Paula’s efforts in the skating world.

After her death in 2009, Jeff created several awards in Paula’s name to honor her work, including one that is the equivalent of USMS' Ransom Arthur award, that are presented by him annually at both the adult skating national championships and one of the major international competitions. A grant was also created by Jeff in Paula’s name to fund research into Prion Diseases through the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Foundation. In addition, Jeff arranged to have a rose named after Paula to honor her passion for growing roses during her lifetime.

Jeff currently lives in Pleasanton, Calif., and is the chief financial officer of a privately-held company in Burbank, Calif. Prior to his current role, Jeff has been the CFO for Sunkist Growers, Inc., Virgin Entertainment, and Kinko's.
