Child's Play
By Linda Shoenberger
This month’s American Swimming Coaches Association magazine SWIMMING addresses an important issue. The children joining their swim teams are not as fit as they used to be.
The general consensus is that children are not getting enough outside play anymore. They are not building strong bodies. Instead they are spending time parked in front of the TV, computer and video games.

Permission to Play
By Karen Drucker
It was a perfect day for a swim. Well, not exactly a swim—more like a race. There were about 50 of us standing in our swimsuits, goggles in one hand, neoprene black caps in the other, waiting to swim in the San Francisco Bay under the Golden Gate Bridge.

So You Want to Be a Masters Swimmer?
By Lisa Wolf, ANCM/DCAC Masters
Hazy recollections of predawn workouts, monster sets and two-a-days, sometimes flit across my memory like a vague dream. I know it happened years ago but as a parent of two teens, a swim coach and someone with a day job, I find it difficult to find pool time for myself. Life is complicated with work, family obligations and an aging body conspiring to make daily practices a thing of the past.

One Fitness Swimmer's Path
By Linda Shoenberger
Dave Brancamp is a 50-year-old swimmer living in Reno, Nevada with his wife Tamie and son Chris. After he finished college at Fresno State University he became interested in triathlons. Thus began his journey into the world of fitness swimming.
At first he concentrated on the run and bike part of the triathlon. He could swim moderately well so he didn’t put much emphasis on time in the water. Just once or twice a week of practice seemed ok to him. But when he moved to Reno at age 34, he found a group of fitness swimmers where he simply fit in. Does that sound familiar to anyone?

Why Fitness Swimming Matters
By Linda Shoenberger
I had the pleasure of meeting Coach Nancy Brown of Maryland Masters a few years ago at YMCA Masters Nationals. Every day after dinner she gathered her swimmers into the hospitality suite and gave out goofy awards to swimmers who had accomplished something for themselves that day. We all laughed at her antics, especially since she always showed up in some off-the-wall Halloween outfit, setting the theme for the evening’s shenanigans.

As the Fire Fades
By Ashley Jones
Have you ever come to the realization that the intensity you have felt in the water for so many years is no longer there? You know—that extra something that kicks in, moving into a higher gear, causing you to stretch farther, kick harder and drive to the wall.
It just happened to me the other day—the realization that I am no longer overly concerned with how fast I am swimming. I have watched my times slowing down in the last five years, but have failed to look at the process taking place as this was occurring.

The "E" Word
By by Linda Schoenberger
Evidently not everyone is as enthralled with exercise as we fitness swimmers are. Take my hairdresser for example. He lives across the street from a beautiful little lake in Reno that was built by the WPA many years ago. I mentioned to him, while he was cutting my hair, that I thought he was lucky to live by such a gorgeous place to walk.

Plan Your Plate
By Amanda Telford
Swimmers have chosen an exercise that is a little more preparation intensive than say, running. We can’t just throw on our suits and head out the door: we need to get to the pool, suit up, brace ourselves for cold-ish water, jump in and swim. The back end is similar–we need to shower to get the chlorine off and then put ourselves back together again.
