Why Fitness Swimming Matters
By Linda Shoenberger

I had the pleasure of meeting Coach Nancy Brown of Maryland Masters a few years ago at YMCA Masters Nationals. Every day after dinner she gathered her swimmers into the hospitality suite and gave out goofy awards to swimmers who had accomplished something for themselves that day. We all laughed at her antics, especially since she always showed up in some off-the-wall Halloween outfit, setting the theme for the evening’s shenanigans.

As the Fire Fades
By Ashley Jones

Have you ever come to the realization that the intensity you have felt in the water for so many years is no longer there? You know—that extra something that kicks in, moving into a higher gear, causing you to stretch farther, kick harder and drive to the wall.

It just happened to me the other day—the realization that I am no longer overly concerned with how fast I am swimming. I have watched my times slowing down in the last five years, but have failed to look at the process taking place as this was occurring.

The "E" Word
By by Linda Schoenberger

Evidently not everyone is as enthralled with exercise as we fitness swimmers are. Take my hairdresser for example. He lives across the street from a beautiful little lake in Reno that was built by the WPA many years ago. I mentioned to him, while he was cutting my hair, that I thought he was lucky to live by such a gorgeous place to walk.

Plan Your Plate
By Amanda Telford

Swimmers have chosen an exercise that is a little more preparation intensive than say, running. We can’t just throw on our suits and head out the door: we need to get to the pool, suit up, brace ourselves for cold-ish water, jump in and swim. The back end is similar–we need to shower to get the chlorine off and then put ourselves back together again.

The Real World Impact of Coaches and Teammates
By Kalpana Nathan

I joined Mountain View Masters in February of this year. The idea was planted in my reluctant brain last November by Carolyn Boak, who gave me some numbers to call and convinced me that it would be just fine for someone with no competitive swimming experience to give it a shot. Little did I know that Carolyn herself is a coach and holds several world championship records; one of our colleagues who overheard us talking (after I joined MVM) mentioned this about her. I can tell you that had I heard that before, I never would have ventured out to test the waters. It surely would have intimidated me, having never been any sort of athlete my entire life.

Fun & Healthy at the Same Time
By by Linda Shoenberger

My brother gave me a book one Christmas called Younger Next Year. Ho hum, I thought. Looks like another boring self-help book. It sat on the shelf for about a year until I had run out of books to read. I didn’t have my Kindle at the time and I needed a good afternoon reading session after my 2-1/2 hour swim workout. So I cracked it open. And I read it practically straight through. Co-written by Manhattan internist Dr. Henry S. Lodge, who is on the faculty of Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, and his 70-year-old patient, ex-lawyer Chris Crowley, the book is based on medical research about health.

Cramping - What a Pain! (But one that can be avoided)
By Steve Born, Fueling Expert – Hammer Nutrition

Science has a number of theories as to why muscle cramps occur; however, no definitive answers have been given. That’s a real drag because, of the potential performance-inhibiting issues involved in swimming, arguably nothing can stop you in your tracks quicker than a full-fledged muscle cramp.
