Name: Thomas D. Boak
Nominated for: Treasurer
Nominated by: Doug Church
Letters of Reference from: Nancy Ridout and Doug Church
I have had a very real passion for United States Masters Swimming since becoming involved in 1977. First at the local level and then at the National level, I have been active in our organization for almost thirty years as a swimmer, a coach, a meet director, and an administrator. I still see things that need to be done, and I believe that I can make a very real contribution to the new administration.
Response to Questions
Why are you interested in this position and why do you believe you would be a good candidate?
I have broad and varied experience at all levels within our organization and believe that my perspective will be valuable to the new Executive Committee.
With respect to the position of Treasurer, I have chaired the Finance Committee for the past four years, which has given me the opportunity to work closely with the current Treasurer and Controller. I also have a good understanding of the financial policies of USMS.
What do you consider to be the major issues facing USMS now and in the future. As a person holding an elected position within USMS, how would you address these issues?
I am concerned about the lack of growth in our organization over the past four years. I believe we need to investigate the defection of some of our coaches as a result of our policies regarding membership and insurance and we need to put more emphasis on a comprehensive marketing strategy.
I also believe that the current “top-down” approach toward management and communication is not the best way to involve the members of our organization in the decision-making process. I would hope to help re-establish a concept of management which encourages more grass roots involvement.
