Summary Statement

Yes, there really are USMS members in the Land of Oz (Kansas)!  I have enjoyed serving USMS at the National level and would like to continue to do so.  In no other job or activity have I ever been surrounded by such an intelligent, talented group of people who are all so committed to achieving a common goal.  My experience on the Finance and Registration Committees as well as the Database Task Force have given me a broad understanding of the workings of USMS.  Thank you for your consideration!

Response to Questions

Why are you interested in this position and why do you believe you would be a good candidate?

I have enjoyed serving USMS at the National level and would like to continue to do so.  In no other job or activity have I ever been surrounded by such an intelligent, talented group of people who are all so committed to achieving a common goal.

Why would I be a good candidate?  Because I’m a swimmer in a situation familiar to a large number of our USMS members.  I come from a small LMSC (less than 250 swimmers) in a sparsely-populated Zone.  I live in a city with very few organized Masters swim teams.  I’m lucky to be able to swim with one of them, but it’s been a constant struggle for our team to stay alive.  I have absolutely no natural athletic ability whatsoever (I was the kid who got C’s in gym class in junior high).  Needless to say, I didn’t compete in any organized sports in school.  It wasn’t until I joined a Masters group in my mid-twenties that I learned the “proper” way to swim.

My point is that I understand the needs and desires of the “average” Masters swimmer and will keep them in mind when making decisions.

What do you consider to be the major issues facing USMS now and in the future. As a person holding an elected position within USMS, how would you address these issues?

United States Masters Swimming is the best-kept secret around.  We need to change that!  One way to do that is to make it as easy as possible to join USMS.  I’m talking about a topic that is near and dear to my heart: online registration.  Our current registration system (through 53 different LMSCs) presents a unique set of challenges for online registration.  It’s a complex issue, but one we need to address.

Another issue is one that I have observed on my own team:  the vast majority of them do not compete in swim meets.  We need to ensure that USMS provides value to them as well as the more “elite” swimmers.

Please list USMS committees on which you have served. Include the dates you were on the committees and the names of the committee chairs under whom you served:

  • Member, Registration Committee, 1997 to 2001, Chair:  Sarah Hromada
  • Finance Committee, 1994 to present, Chairs:  Dave Zander, Jeanne Ensign, Doug Church, Tom Boak
  • Member, USMS Database Task Force, 2003

Please list any other experience that relates to your qualifications for the position.

  • Recipient of the USMS Dorothy Donnelly Service Award, 2004
  • Breadbasket Zone Chair, 1997 to 1999
  • Registrar, Missouri Valley LMSC, 1989 to present
