The Dorothy Donnelly USMS Service Award
As a volunteer-driven organization, USMS is forever grateful to the hundreds of volunteers who give their time, talent, and expertise to help all phases of our programs. Among those volunteers are some whose service stands out in its scope and its impact on the program and the USMS members who have benefited from their efforts on the local, regional, and national level.
The first USMS Service Awards were instituted and presented in 1997 by then USMS President, Mel Goldstein. In 2000 the award was renamed to honor Dorothy Donnelly. Dot was very active in the Connecticut AAU as the registrar for not only swimming, but also synchronized swimming and track and field. She went on to be an active USMS member and accomplished swimmer in Connecticut, and she was the first USMS Executive Secretary, serving from 1985 to 1996. Her incomparable candor, enthusiasm, persistence, and unselfish dedication provided much of what makes USMS the unique user-friendly organization it is today. Dot was a Ransom J. Arthur award winner in 1983.
